9 things you must do before renovating or building part 3 5

Category: Cleaning Equipment – Tags: , , – admin 6:36 am

Righto, so far in this five part series we’ve looked at why you should research building, and how to figure out what it is you’re really looking for.

We’ve then taken our ideas and put pen to paper, writing a brief that will help clarify our needs over our wants.

We’ve considered how much money we have to play with, we may have even pulled in our plans a bit.

And now it’s time to think about picking a building designer and a builder.

The building designer

“You need one,” says heritage building designer Peter Latemore. “Not only a builder, but a building designer,” he adds.

It turns out that renovating and building can be quite a complicated process. Unless you can dedicate yourself almost full time to the project you are going to need a lot of help.

“First you need to get a site consult. Most designers will offer this at a free, but it’s really worth it. In fact, get more than one. Get yourself and idea of what you’re getting into.

“Nearly all projects, whether you’re building upwards, outwards or downwards need documentation.

“Building designers are also good at liasing with other consultants – and there are lots of them, like surveyors, town planners, engineers, certifiers and so on.

“There are also endless codes to deal with, the BCA, Council Standards and more.”

In parts of Australia, like Queensland where Latemore operates, a building designer is legally the same as an architect.

“Choosing one is the same as picking any professional. Check association memberships, license, awards and the website to get an idea of the designer’s calibre.”

The builder

Latemore says, “things are slow so there a few good builders scratching around for work.

He suggests asking for referrals from a building designer, friends and neighbours.

“Then go and have a look at a building site of a builder you are considering.

“Don’t trespass, just have a look to see if it is tidy and organised. This will give you an idea of if there are good subbies and a site supervisor.”

You have to bear your builder.

“Also have a think about whether you will get along. Can you discuss or argue positively with this person? It’s inevitable, trust me!”

It’s important to involve the builder early on in the piece to sort out drawings that will be needed and to discuss the job. This will help you build trust.

“Let them guide you,” suggests Latermore.

Good builders are usually busy, so “don’t abuse of their time – offer to pay for quotes and advice,” he warns. And ask questions in batches rather than every hour.

Now you see it now you don’t the hideaway kitchen

Category: HVAC – Tags: , , – admin 6:35 am

Two hideaway kitchen design ideas you’ve never seen before.

The insane success of cooking shows like MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules has left many Australians wishing for a big new kitchen.

A dream kitchen, decked out with all the latest snazzy appliances, with loads of benchspace and room to move, to prep to create to entertain!

One of those professional looking set ups – just like on TV.

A kitchen that one is proud to show off. Not a kitchen to hide away.

But not everyone has been wooed by the showtime chefs.

Some would love to simply sweep away the mess with the swipe of a hand.

Enter the kitchen with sliding panels that reveals or hides itself in a flash.

The Kitchen Hide System

Theodore Thonga has conceptualised a kitchen that tucks away mess on a bench instantly. It’s also a clever idea for small houses and apartments where space is a premium. Doubling up a room’s purpose is an efficient way to economise space.

Now try stretching your imagination far further than sliding doors.

 The Kitchen Hideaway

As part of a design competition for appliances in the future, an Australian, Daniel Dobrogorsky, came up with a virtual reality idea where people can use a headset to make themselves food virtually.

Pop it on and the hungry soul can imagine an actual kitchen and then how the meal would be prepared.

The thoughts are sent to robotic chefs that will then make the food exactly as ‘ordered’- eat your heart out reality cooking shows.

Instruction on Making Ice Cream

Category: Household – Tags: , , – admin 5:58 am

Ice cream has given us sweet memories. Homemade ice cream is even sweeter. Follow this instruction and create your own ice cream.

Firstly, get the materials ready. You would need:

1 extra-large empty coffee can with lid

1 small empty coffee can with lid

Ingredients for one batch of homemade ice cream (see recipe here)

1 large batch of ice, crushed if possible

Rock salt

After that, start by adding the ingredients for the ice cream together. Let your child help you measure and mix! Let the mixture chill in the fridge before you set up the ice cream maker. Step one can be done a day or a couple of hours ahead of time to make sure the ice cream mix is thoroughly chilled. Place the clean, dry cylinder in a plastic bag (to protect against freezer burn) and place it upright in the back of your freezer. The cylinder will take 8 to 9 hours to freeze at -22 degrees F, 12 to 13 hours at -13 degrees F, 20 to 22 hours at 0 degrees F and 24 hours at 5 degrees F. Shake the cylinder to check for complete freezing: you should not hear any sloshing of the water inside the cylinder’s walls when it is fully frozen.

Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker through the feeding hole in the lid and turn on the machine. Let it run 30 to 40 minutes or until the mixture is as thick as you want it to get. Turn off and unplug the ice cream maker and remove the lid by pressing the release button at the top. Remove the paddle. Your ice cream is ready to serve or to store in the freezer for later.

You can also add some specific materials, such as fruits, into the ice cream to create your favor.

Hot Plates

Category: Home appliance – Tags: – admin 2:56 am

Hot plates are very useful and its mechanics are quite simple. The most important factor is that hot plates are inexpensive and are often a staple of hotel and college dorm rooms.

Scientists use hot plates in replacement of a live flame heat source, such as a Bunsen burner. In 1942, a New Jersey man named Arthur Rosinger filed a patent for a magnetic stirrer for use with a hot plate. The stirrer operates by placing a plastic-coated magnet in the heating vessel, while having a rotating base magnet below the vessel. This self-stirring technology is frequently used in chemical experiments.

Hot plates are a fire danger, and have resulted in many fires and even fatalities worldwide. These fires can be caused by overheating the plate by accidentally leaving it on, or occasionally by having the cooking item catch fire. Never leave a hot plate unattended, and be sure to keep a fire extinguisher with you in case of disaster. Experts recommend that children not be allowed to operate hot plates without adult supervision.

The heating devices weigh about six to eight lbs (2.7-3.6 kg,) depending on the materials used. They vary in price, with single-burner models available from as low as $15 US Dollars (USD) to up to $400 USD for an advanced inductive heat version. Some newer models look like trays or griddles, allowing a larger heating surface usable for multiple items. Similar to the hot plate is the warming tray, which has a lower temperature range and are often used by caterers to keep food items at the correct temperature.

Why hesitate to buy one hot plate? You will find it very helpful in making your life much easier.

Comparing Rice Cookers and Crock Pots

Category: Home appliance – Tags: , , – admin 2:00 am

Slow cookers are in most instances referred to generically as “crock pots” . Rice cookers are popular in Asian countries where rice is heavily consumed. Which one is better? Let’s make a comparison.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is credited with developing one of the original incarnations of the modern rice cooker in the 1940s. It was a revised version of the “electric rice tubs” popularized in the 1920s. Toshiba would later perfect the rice cooker model. Conversely, today’s slow cooker emerged in the 1970s when women began to enter the workforce and the country faced an energy crisis. Slow cookers dually addressed each of those realities: They functioned using low wattage and allowed women to cook while outside of the home.

According to Toshiba, rice cookers are present in more than half of all Japanese households. “The New York Times” reported rice cooker sales at more than 3 million in 2007. Conversely, there has been an influx of sales of slow cookers in the United States. According to Slate, slow cooker manufacturer Rival saw a 20 percent increase in sales from 2006 to 2010.

Meals that can be prepared using a slow cooker run the gamut and include dishes made with pasta, meat, dairy and fish, and even cakes. Many supplementary cookbooks and recipes are available. Today, rice cookers are primarily used to prepare variants of rice dishes, but can also steam oats, beans, polenta and frittatas.

In the end, as far as I am concerned, rice cookers are more functional than crock pots.

Electric Hot Dog Cookers

Category: Home appliance – Tags: , , – admin 9:34 am

Hot dogs are very delicious; especially those cooked by electric hot dog cookers.

Electric hot dog cookers are a beneficial way to cook a hot dog without the mess of boiling water or frying the hot dog in a pan. Electric hot dog cookers are useful at places such as sporting events, fairs and amusement parks where large amounts of people have to be served and the hot dogs need to be kept warm until serving.

Many hot dog cookers feature rollers in which the hot dogs roll while receiving even heat distribution. Some cookers feature electric heating lamps that keep the hot dog warmed while being cost-effective at the same time. Most hot dog cookers are temperature regulated to determine how fast the hot dog will be cooked. Some hot dog cookers also feature bun warmers, which make serving convenient as well as tasty.

Electric hot dog cookers offer not only convenience but recognition as well. Some patrons and food-goers look for hot dog stands or electric hot dog cookers for where they want to order their food from as opposed to other stands. Electric hot dog cookers also make large scale distribution easy by being able to serve multiple patrons at the same time and then have the ability to quickly cook more hot dogs after the cooked dogs are served.

In the end, when buying electric hot dog cookers, do pay attention to the reviews and instructions.

Food Processor Reviews

Category: Home appliance – Tags: , , – admin 7:39 am

Reading product reviews is very necessary before buying the product. This review is about food processors.

If you don’t want to invest much in a food processor, your choice gets tricky. Some inexpensive models get terrible reviews. An exception in this price class is the 10-cup Hamilton Beach Chef Prep 70610. This model gets great support in user reviews, with owners saying it’s a solid choice for basic tasks like mincing onions and shredding cheese. Plus, we found comments that it does a commendable job with cookie dough. Its features include pulse plus two speed settings, a multi-use blade for chopping and mixing and a reversible slicing/shredding disc. On the downside, this Hamilton Beach is only available in white and isn’t much to look at. It also isn’t tested in professional reviews, so it’s hard to know how well it can handle tougher jobs like slicing hard foods like raw beets, or small, course foods like nuts.

For smaller families (or smaller budgets), experts praise the 7-cup KitchenAid KFP715, a more compact food processor. Professional reviewers rave that it’s quiet, and one says it has enough oomph to slice hard sausage like salami and pepperoni, though it does encounter some performance issues when kneading dough. While most owners agree it is a workhorse, some say they wish this food processor had more than two blades for tasks other than chopping and slicing. This compact food processor has two speeds — continuous and pulse — and is available in white, black or red. KitchenAid backs it with a one-year warranty.

There are many other reviews on food processor on the internet, you can search them online.

Barbeque Safety

Category: Home appliance – Tags: , , – admin 6:30 am

Barbeque is very enjoyable, but when using the grills, safety is very important.

Charcoal and propane gas grills must be used outdoors in a well-ventilated area. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 33 percent of home fires involving grills occur on an unenclosed porch or balcony. Another 18 percent occur on a patio, terrace or courtyard, and 11 percent start on an exterior house wall. These fires can be prevented by placing the grill away from trees and buildings and out from under roofs and overhanging branches. Also, make sure the grill is on a level surface away from high traffic and play areas.

Gas grills are safe and convenient when used properly. When used without care, gas grills cause over 80 percent of all grilling related structure fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Always use gas grills outdoors in well-ventilated areas and open the lid before turning on the gas. Keep the lid open until the burners are lit, as a closed lid can allow gas to accumulate and cause an explosion.

The first time you use your gas grill each year, and whenever moving it, check the gas tank and hoses for leaks. Spray or sponge a solution of water and liquid dish soap on the tank and hoses. Bubbles will form if there is a leak. If any bubbles are detected or if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and grill and have the grill serviced before using it. Perform this check monthly during the grilling season.

When finished grilling, scrape the grill clean, then turn the gas off at the burner and at the cylinder. Remember to store extra gas containers outdoors away from the grill.
